The Stellar Field Though enshrouded by filamentary fine structures made up of dust and gas, the uppermost region of the Lagoon Nebula shows a field full of dazzling stars. Most of the stars have hues of yellow and orange, and some of them show an indication of “extinction”, or starlight reddening. This effect is caused by the interstellar dust that more efficiently attenuates the blue portion of starlight than red, making the objects appear redder than they actually are.
